The work of the British Dovecote Society
The British Dovecote Society exists to promote the study, documentation and preservation of dovecotes and pigeon lofts throughout the British Isles.
It aims to achieve this objective by locating and recording as many of the country’s remaining dovecotes as possible and to this end, has already established a data base listing major dovecote sites throughout England, Wales and Scotland, many of which still exist today. In 1997 with the aid of a grant from the Council for British Archaeology, the British Dovecote Society undertook a survey of the remaining dovecotes of Yorkshire.
- The British Dovecote Society undertakes the occasional publication of articles, monographs and booklets about the subject, and among its titles which it publishes is A Comprehensive Bibliography of Dovecotes, which is reprinted and up-dated regularly.
- The British Dovecote Society has staged many exhibitions and promotional events drawing attention to the rich heritage of dovecotes, and with the assistance of grant aid from the Yorkshire Tourist Board and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) was responsible for organising the touring exhibition Doves and Dovecotes in 1998.
- The British Dovecote Society can offer advice on the restoration and preservation of these buildings, including the preparation of plans and drawings for assistance toward local Authority grant aid applications.
- The British Dovecote Society is able to provide a speaker to present an illustrated talk on dovecotes to interested groups and societies.
